Tips for a stronger AI-generated cover letter
Last updated 1 April 2026
Before generating:
- Paste the complete JD, not just the job title
- Ensure your resume has detailed bullet points since the AI draws from these
- Choose the tone that matches the company culture
The AI avoids common mistakes automatically:
- Never starts with I am writing to apply for
- Never uses words like passionate about or I am thrilled
- Never repeats your resume word for word
- Always stays under 350 words
After generating, consider editing these:
- Add the hiring manager name if you know it
- Add one specific personal detail about why this particular company appeals to you
- If you have a referral, mention it in the first line since this doubles callback rates
For Indian job applications:
- Formal tone works best for FAANG, MNCs, consulting, and banking
- Conversational works well for product companies and tech startups
- For traditional Indian conglomerates like Tata or Reliance, use Formal
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Do not just summarise your resume in the letter
- Do not make it longer than one page
- Do not mention salary expectations
- Do not use generic phrases like team player or detail-oriented
